Special education has become a crucial field in education these past years. Because of this, the government and several private foundations have given special education a priority in funding in order to encourage teachers to focus on special needs education. Special education scholarships now abound in several states through government as well as private funded grants.

Top 5 Special Education Scholarships Available for Teachers

  1. Little Keswick Foundation for Special Education. The Little Keswick Foundation for Special Education of Albemarle Country, Virginia in coordination with the Curry School Foundation set up a new scholarship for teachers who are taking a master’s degree in Curry School and intend to teach in the field of special education. In 2011, the foundation awarded a $2,500 scholarship and they anticipated to be able to double the amount the following year.
  2. Epsilon Sigma Alpha Special Education Scholarships for Teachers of Special Needs. Individuals who intend to focus their work on persons with special needs in an educational setting can apply for a grant from the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International through their Scholarship Board of the North Carolina Council. On April of every year a scholarship grant ranging from $500 to $2,500 is awarded to various applicants who are either undergraduate students or current teachers in North Carolina. Awardees are required to teach at a North Carolina school for at least one year in the field of special education.
  3. Indiana State Minority Teacher/Special Services Scholarship. This scholarship grant was initially established by the Indiana General Assembly in response to the deficiency in Black and Hispanic teachers in the state of Indiana. Eventually it came to include Special Education teachers as well as Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists who seek certification. The award is dispensed by the Division of Student Financial Aid and the amount varies between a maximum of $1,000 for non-minority applicants and a maximum of $4,000 for minority applicants.
  4. Dorothy B. Lucas Special Education Scholarships. The Dorothy B. Lucas Special Education Scholarship is a scholarship grant for graduate students who are majoring in special needs branches like Visual or Hearing Impairment, Early Childhood Special Education and Clinical Rehabilitative Services in Orientation and Mobility. The grant is awarded twice a year, one in the fall and another in the spring, and offers a value of up to $2,500. These special education scholarships for teachers are granted through the San Francisco State University.
  5. NAJA Graduate Scholarship Program. A scholarship grant is made available to graduate students in special education by the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries in their Graduate Scholarship Program. This scholarship is open to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee or Texas who intend to work directly with children of special needs.
